Most new diesel vehicles are equipped with an exhaust treatment system called Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR).
AdBlue is a non-toxic diesel exhaust fluid, made up of high purity urea and deionized water used to treat exhausts on diesel engines to reduce harmful emissions. Although it’s odourless and non-toxic, it can corrode metallic surfaces and requires to be handled with extreme caution. Contrary to what many people think, AdBlue is not a fuel additive, it’s a trademarked name for a brand of diesel exhaust fluid - owned by the German Association of Automotive Industry - it has to be regularly checked in the stand-alone tank of the vehicle.
When AdBlue fluid is injected into exhaust gases it can filter out more than 90% of the harmful gas emissions of nitrogen oxide (NOx) converting into steam and nitrogen, resulting in less pollution. All vehicles with this system have a warning system in the dashboard that will inform you when it is necessary to fill the AdBlue tank. It also monitors the level of AdBlue in the tank. And if the tank is empty, the engine will not start! The yellow warning will appear when the remaining range of AdBlue is approximately 1,000 miles.
This warning is repeated every 31 miles and is accompanied by an audible tone. If these warnings are not acted upon, the warning turns red; once this happens the car will not restart once the ignition is turned off.
However, although the benefits of this system are numerous, it can also be a very expensive system to repair, due to a complex arrangement of sensors, pumps and modules. That’s where Octane Tuning can assist to delete the SCR system when a NOx sensor fault appears on your dashboard. The system is electronically disabled within the ECU and all associated warning lights switched off.
